Looking back, it's hard to believe that a whole decade has passed since I first stepped into Singapore and began my journey with Presbyterian Preschool Services (PPS). Time has flown by so quickly, it feels like just yesterday when I was starting out, navigating a new culture and learning the ropes of early childhood education in a different environment.
A Journey of Growth and Learning
When I arrived from the Philippines, I faced the challenge of adapting to a new educational system. There was so much to learn, and I had to unlearn some of the things I had been taught back home. But PPS was there every step of the way, supporting me, encouraging me, and helping me grow into the educator I am today.
Now, as the Principal of Little Olive Tree (Marsiling), I am blessed to lead and inspire my team and the children we nurture every day. My journey has been one of growth, both personal and professional, and I am deeply grateful for the opportunities and experiences that have shaped me.
Memorable Moments and Takeaways
There are so many memories that I hold dear. One of the most unforgettable moments happened during the COVID-19 pandemic. With restrictions keeping us indoors, I had to get creative to keep my nursery class engaged. One day, I became a human slide! Sitting on a small chair, I let the children slide down my legs, one after another. Can you imagine 19 little ones, laughing and giggling, all sliding down? It was pure joy and a reminder that sometimes, the simplest things bring the most happiness.
Another special memory involves a little boy with a speech and language delay. He struggled to express himself and often resorted to pointing and crying. I made it my mission to help him find his voice. After months of persistence, he finally called me "Na," then "Ina," and eventually, "Regina." The day he said my full name, my heart melted. It was a moment of triumph, not just for him, but for both of us.
In 2023, a simple but profound moment made me realize the impact I have on my students. One day, feeling frazzled and disheveled, I looked at my reflection and muttered, "I cannot even comb my hair." A little boy came up to me and said, "You are still pretty!" That simple affirmation filled my heart with pride and reminded me of the importance of teaching children to see and appreciate the beauty in themselves and others.
The Source of Inspiration
My journey as an early childhood educator began with uncertainty. I never imagined myself singing nursery rhymes like "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star," yet here I am, finding joy in every song and dance. Over time, I realized that my role was to nurture these little seeds, helping them grow into beautiful flowers. This realization confirmed that I was on the right path, one filled with purpose and fulfillment.
Throughout this journey, my faith in God has been my guiding light. I often asked Him, "Why am I here? What is my purpose?" While the answers didn’t always come immediately, I trusted in His plan. I prayed for guidance, wisdom, and a grateful heart.
'With a heart of gratitude, you will find happiness in everything"
These prayers have carried me through challenges, reminding me of the story of King Solomon, who sought God's wisdom to lead his people.
Words of Encouragement
As I reflect on these past ten years, I am often asked why I have stayed when others have moved on. The answer is simple: I find happiness in what I do, whether it's big or small. Seeing the joy in the faces of my children and colleagues brings me immense satisfaction. I hold on to a quote from one of my leaders: "Choosing to stay is more difficult. But, often, it is the best choice." God has called us to this service, and I trust in His plan.
To my fellow educators, I say this:
"Find joy in your journey, trust in His guidance, and know that you are making a difference every single day."
