Alex who has cerebral palsy struggles with balance, physical mobility and the ability to sustain his attention during lesson times. Most times, even after trying his best, he would still struggle. Often, he ends up expressing his exasperation by butting his head against his Educational Support Teacher's (EST) head or pinching her.
Recently, after one such incident, his EST asked if he was angry with her. His response? "I chose you." In Alex-speak, this phrase means he chose to work through his obstacles and struggles with her, no matter how difficult it is.
In Little Olive Tree by Presbyterian Preschool Services, we are humbled whenever families choose us to journey with them, persisting through the challenges for their children to grow and glow.
