Brian’s Story: a Story of Hope and Support

Pseudonym of Child: Brian

Diagnosis: Suspected Autism Spectrum Disorder

When Brian joined Little Olive Tree in 2023, he was already 5 years old. Despite his age, his teachers quickly noticed that he faced challenges that made it harder for him to connect with others. He found it difficult to follow instructions independently, to express his needs clearly, and often struggled to accept help when it was offered. Instead of playing with his classmates, he preferred to be alone.

While Brian's teachers were concerned, they also saw potential. His teachers knew that with early intervention, Brian could develop the skills and coping mechanisms he needed to relate to others and succeed in school. They recommended that he get a formal diagnosis and to have him enrolled in the Education Support Programme (ESP), where he could receive the individualized attention. Through one-on-one support with an Education Support Teacher (EST), Brian would have the opportunity to build the coping mechanisms and social skills he needed to interact better with his peers and gain more confidence in his abilities. With the right support and early intervention, he could build the skills he needed to thrive - skills that would help him not only at preschool but also in primary school and beyond.

A Decision for His Future

However, Brian’s parents were understandably hesitant. They feared that a formal diagnosis might lead to stigma, limiting his potential and making him feel labeled. They also hoped that Brian might outgrow his challenges on his own as time passed. With the added concern of the cost of the ESP program, they were uncertain about taking this next step.

A Team that Refused to Give Up

Despite these concerns, Brian's teachers and the school team were unwavering in their belief that early intervention was crucial for Brian's development. They patiently worked with Brian, offering support and encouragement, and helping his parents understand the benefits of getting a diagnosis, access to early intervention and the ESP program. After over 15 months of discussions, evaluations, and support, Brian is now in the process of receiving a formal diagnosis. This is a huge milestone—a first step toward the help he desperately needs.

ESP: Breaking Down Barriers

The goal of the Education Support Programme is simple: to break down the barriers to learning that children like Brian face. With the right support, these children can develop the skills they need to bridge the gap between themselves and their typically developing peers. ESP isn’t just about addressing challenges—it’s about empowering children to meet the children where they are and helping them reach their full potential.

Brian’s journey is far from over. While the diagnosis is a significant step, it’s only the beginning of his path toward growth. With your support, he can continue to make progress and develop the skills he needs to succeed in school and in life.
