Being literate enables us to make sense of the world around us, communicate effectively and thus form meaningful connections with the people in our lives. And the gateway to a child’s literacy? Through adventures and experiences that come alive through the telling and retelling of their favourite books. This was Ms Bethanie Wong’s intention for Presbyterian Preschool (Ghim Moh) when she rallied her teachers to commemorate World Book Day (23rd April 2023) in advance with their children yesterday.
This year’s theme for the occasion was to “make it your own” World Book Day. The organisers intend for every child all over the world to have at least a beloved story of their own, and that the children would grow to make the story their own.
At Ghim Moh, the children dressed up as their favourite book characters and shared with their friends their favourite books. Even the children who are still learning to express themselves were part of the excitement!
There were also children who were sick and had to stay home, but still dressed up for the occasion. Through this process, the end product of how well they dressed up or their ability to retell their favourite stories was not the main goal. Instead it was to encourage a love for reading just because reading is fun!
Reading for pleasure is an important indicator of how well the children may develop in their future years. When a child finds that reading is exciting, accessible and relevant to their lives, it unlocks a great deal of potential for them.

It means that curious children have the means to satisfy their curiosity and grow in their appetite for learning!
